dedicated to motherhood. . ..
Around a month ago, I met Meghna..
Meghu tai, as we fondly call her has been my idol for a long long time.Always a topper at whatever she did, right from school, throughout college and MBA a sportsperson and above all a great human being.
All parents in the society, sweared by her, and we…. the lesser mortals were given her example.. from time to time.
Now back from US after three years, a marriage and a baby, when I got to know that she was in town , I just had to meet her..
And so one Saturday afternoon I landed at her house.
An athlete once upon a time, she had put on quite a few…Of her long lustrous hair all that remained was a short pony.. Her face looked tired..
mental note to myself….this is what marriage does to a fine girl!
Her house was in a complete mess…Toys, baby clothes, newspapers and some more baby clothes…
Shifting everything from the sofa,I made some space for myself…
After the necessary pleasantries she started to me about how her daughter cannot sleep at night and how difficult it is to get a nanny…
I remembered those days when she was in college and me in school and she always had the most awesomest stories to tell…
Somehow this baby and nanny talk just didn’t go well with her..and this was just the beginning…Then came ….THE PHOTOS!!
Meghu tai brought out her lappy and placed it in front of me… “See the photos of my kid” she exclaimed
One thousand two hundred and thirty two photos. Seriously??????
Now don’t get me wrong. I really do like to see photos… But I tend to get a little uncomfortable when the same face stares at me from all possible angles…
She caught me smiling at the photo of her stark naked one yr old and all I could manage was a feeble ‘cute’…I wonder why all parents love to click naked pics of a baby in the tub… Each and every one of us has one of those.. I guess its got to do a little with the sleep deprivation and hormones etc..
And just as I was about to finish with the pics and start some decent conversation my niece decided it was time to meet her aunt! (me! 😐 )
As I waited for her mommy to go and fetch her I wondered what my first reaction should be… I practiced “chooooo chweet…” and decided it was the best thing to say..
But as she returned with her daughter all I could do was smile. The baby clung to her mother like a baby bear. Then she looked up at me through her half awake eyes and managed a grin before digging herself into her mommy again.
How I wish I had a camera!
Then everything fit into place. Meghu tai leaving her job to be a full time mother…. her tired face but the sparkle in her eyes…her fat but still a very lovable figure… and her own reflection in her arms….
I dont know whether I can adequately express the transformation I have undergone. It has totally changed the way I look at womanhood. More of a joy and less of a burden. I respect my mother far more than I ever had.
Maybe someday I too would like to get married and have kids. I would click a zillion pics and show them to all…
and ya… one in the tub too! 😉
